Japanese Language 「Sentence Structure」 The phrase yō ni ("so that") coming after the dictionary or negative (nai) form of a verb indicates the purpose of or motive for an action. Examples: 電車に間に合うように駅へタクシーで行きました。 Densha ni maniau yō ni eki e takushī de ikimashita. I went to the station by taxi so that I would be there in time for the train. 目的を達成するようにがんばっています。 Mokuteki o tassei suru yō ni ganbatte imasu. We are doing our best to achieve the goal. マイクは学校に遅れないように毎朝早く起きる。 Maiku wa gakkō ni okurenai yō ni maiasa hayaku okiru. Mike gets up early every morning so as not to be late for school. 忘れないようにメモをとった。 Wasurenai yō ni memo o totta. I made a note so I wouldn't forget.
