Japanese Language 「Verbs」 「Negative Verb Form・Vneg」 Vneg + nai ない "don't/won't do," "there isn't/won't be" Vneg nai is used to express actions or states which regularly don't take place/exist or won't take place/exist. The auxiliary nai is attached to the verb for negation. This form is used with plain speech. The copula desu may be added to make the expression polite. Examples: この鳥は飛ばない(です)。 Kono tori wa tobanai (desu). This bird does not fly. 青木さんhあ肉を食べない(です)。 Aoki-san wa niku o tabenai (desu). Mr. Aoki doesn't eat meat. 山中さんはテニストーナメントに参加しない(です)。 Yamanaka-san wa tenisu tōnamento ni sanka shinai (desu). Miss Yamanaka won't participate in the tennis tournament.
