Japanese Language 「Verbs」 「Vneg + nakute mo ii・なくてもいい」 "It is all right if ~ not," "don't have to." Vneg nakute mo ii expresses the idea of non-obligation or duty. Examples: このはがきに切手をはらなくてもいい(です)。 Kono hagaki ni kitte o haranakute mo ii (desu). You don't have to stick a stamp on this postcard. 週末は早く起きなくてもいい(です)。 Shūmatsu wa hayaku okinakute mo ii (desu). I don't have to get up early on weekends. この件は今決定しなくてもいい(です)。 Kono ke wa ima kettei shinakute mo ii (desu). We don't have to decide this matter now.
