Japanese Language 「Adjectives and Adverbs」 「N wa/ga は/が+Adj neg」 "Noun is not adjective" 高くない/高くなかった takakunai/takakunakatta (is/was not expensive) きれいではない/きれいではなかった kirei de wa nai/kirei de wa nakatta (is/was not pretty) When using the negative form of an i- or na-adjective as a predicate, it provides information about a noun, which can be considered either the topic or subject of the sentence. Examples: コンサートの切符は高くなかった/高くありませんでした。 Konsāto no kippu wa takakunakatta/takaku arimasen deshita. The concert ticket was not expensive. まだ公園の桜の花はきれいではない/きれいではありません。 ada kōen no sakura no hana wa kirei de wa nai/kirei de wa arimasen. The cherry blossoms in the park are not pretty yet.
