Japanese Language 「Sentence Structure」 The particle ga is used as a conjunction that can be combined with two sentences. Used to mean "but" (also used to mean "and" when loosely combining two sentences) and is often used to introduce a contrast. The repeated use of the particle wa after a noun in a sentence with a conjunctive ga is contrastive. This contrastive wa can be added to nouns or noun phrases that already have a particle attached (Ex., 1, 2, 3). Examples: プールでは泳いだが、海では泳がなかった。 Pūru de wa oyoida ga, umi de wa oyoganakatta. I swam in the pool, but not in the ocean. 姉はパリへは行きましたが、ローマへは行きませんでした。 Ane wa Pari e wa ikimashita ga, rōma e wa ikimasen deshita. My older sister went to Paris, but not to Rome. 須田さんは列車では旅行したが、飛行機では旅行しなかった。 Suda-san wa ressha de wa ryokō shita ga, hikōki de wa ryokō shinakatta. Mr. Suda traveled by train, but not by plane.
