The tense of the sentence is determined by the verb in the main clause. Examples: 雨が降らないうちに帰りましょう。 Ame ga furanai uchi ni kaerimashō. Let's go home before it rains. 子供が起きないうちに朝ご飯を食べました。 Kodomo ga okinai uchi ni asagohan o tabemashita. I ate breakfast before my child got up. 材料が不足しないうちに注文しました。 Zairyō ga fusoku shinai uchi ni chūmon shimashita. We ordered before we were short of the materials.
