Japanese Language [Verbs] [Te Form] [Part 18] [Vte+Iru toki (ni)~ている時(に)] "when~doing~" Vte iru toki (ni) expresses the time when an action or event is/was taking place. Toki 時 (time) is used as a pseudo noun with the function of a conjunction. the tense of the sentence is determined by the verb in the main clause. Examples: 私が山田ーさん と 話して いる 時(に)、 小包 が 届きました。 Watashi ga Yamada-san to hanashite iru toki (ni), kozutsumi ga todokimashita While I was talking with Mrs. Yamada, a package arrived. 朝ごはん を 食べて いる とき(に)電話 が なりました。 Asagohan wo tabete iru toki (ni), denwa ga narimashita.
