Japanese Language 「Verbs」 「Vneg + nai hazu daないはずだ」 "I don't expect that~" "It is not expected that" Vneg nai hazu da will express the speaker's expectation that something won't take place. Examples: 木田さんは火曜日までにアメリカから帰らないはずだ。 Kida-san wa kayōbi made ni Amerika kara kaeranai hazu da. It is not expected that Mr. Kida will return from America by Tuesday. あそこにはアパートを建てないはずです。 Asoko ni wa apāto o tatenai hazu desu. I don't expect that they will build an apartment house over there. 今日は外出しないはずだった。 Kyō wa gaishutsu shinai hazu datta. I was not expected to go out today.
