Japanese Language 「Adjectives and Adverbs」 「Adj pred+toki時」 ”When" The pseudonoun toki is an indicator of time. The particle ni can follow it, but is optional. If the predicate of the main clause is in the past tense, the tense of the toki clause (the subordinate clause) may be either present or past. Examples: さびしい時、友達に電話します。 Sabishii toki, tomodachi ni denwa shimasu. When I'm lonely, I call my friends. ビールが安い/安かった時に、たくさん買っておいた。 Bīru ga yasui/ yasukatta toki ni, takusan katte oita. I bought a lot of beer when it was cheap. 仕事が大変な/大変だった時、同僚に手伝ってもらった。 Shigoto ga taihenna/ taihen datta toki, dōryō ni tetsudatte moratta. When work was difficult, I had my colleagues help me.
