The to clause (the subordnate clause) is used to express a condition that entails an uncontrollable or unavoidable result. The tense before to must be present, regardless of the tense of the main clause. Examples: 窓が小さいと、部屋は暗いです。 Mado ga chiisai to, heya wa kurai desu. If the windows are small, the room will be dark. この料理は辛くないと、まずいですね。 Kono ryōri wa karakunai to, mazui desu ne. If it's not spicy, this dish won't taste good, will it? この機械が駄目だと、新しいのを買わなければならない。 Kono kikai ga dame da to, atarashii no o kawanakareba naranai.
