Japanese Language 「Sentence Structure」 With certain verbs, the te iru form can express an action that takes place over a period of time-a regular or habitual action like "living" in a place or "working" for a company. The particle of ni is used with such verbs to express such meanings indicates the place where the static action (i.e., "living," "working," etc.) occurs. Examples: オルソンさんは日本の会社に勤めている。 Oruson-san wa Nihon no kaisha ni tsutomete iru. Ms. Olson works for a Japanese company. 娘の秋子は演劇学校に行っています。 Musume no Akiko wa engeki gakkō ni itte imasu. My daughter Akiko goes to drama school. ヤングさんは高校で英語を教えていた。 Yangu-san wa kōkō de eigo o oshiete ita. Mr. Young was teaching English at high school.
